7/13/13 at Citizens Bank Park
The day started off in a strange way. Once the Cook’s, (mentioned in 4/14/12, 9/8/12 and 5/4/13 entries) Tim, Todd and Kellan arrived at the gates, things were set up for a normal opening. About 10 minutes before gate time, the tables, bins and garbage cans were all set up like they would on any other day. The gate was open and the ticket-takers were standing by their turnstiles. However, all of the sudden, security guards closed the gates.
However, the gates did open in time. All of the fans went deep down the line, relying on the White Sox offensive players for tossups when they were throwing. I went and got the corner spot over by the dugout where Jeff Manto was throwing with another White Sock (I don’t know what the singular for Sox is, I know Sock but not Sox).
That was a very uncontested first ball of the game.
Farther down the line, my White Sox shirt made a Blake Tekotte tossup that much easier.
In the left-center corner, an unknown Sock (Why do I keep doing this to myself!!!) flipped me up ball number three, my 100th for the season.
I went down the first base line as the Phillies pitchers came out to throw. All of the groups flipped the ball up to other kids except for the last group, which included Luis Garcia.
He was walking in with the ball but turned around for numerous reasons.
1) I said “por favor dame la pelota”
2) I actually knew his name
3) I was the only one not screaming “HERE, HERE”
Anyway, I forgot to photograph the ball as I was quickly on the run to right field where Mark Salas was shagging balls.
When a ball rolled up to the warning track right below me, he pointed at my Sox shirt and then his, smiled and tossed up a near perfect baseball.
After BP, Jesus Tiamo (does he really need an introduction anymore?) flipped me up a sixth baseball. Note him in the background, still tossup up baseballs.
From the second deck, I could see Todd and Tim reaching out for a Tiamo tossup.
As the game progressed, the clouds rolled in.
Another thing rolling in was the tarp.
Out in left field, I took a MyGameBalls scavenger hunt photo for the Cook’s.
Once the game resumed, I went to section 101 with them but…
…Didn’t get anything else.
This was game one of a double header and it ended late, at 7:45 pm. If all went as scheduled, the gates for game two would open at 7:00 pm. That obviously wasn’t happening. Here is the crowd waiting to get in.
